whose novels I have always enjoyed, and who seems to me to write interestingly and with a sure hand This novel, however, I found almost unreadable Anachronistic language and attitudes, stilted conversation, stock characters, plus some didacticism added to the mix when Vickers feels impelled to interject her views on such matters as the importance of libraries or the 11 and grammar schools
